Educational visits

Smart Engineering Infrastructures

In the SEI ICEA Project of Excellence, the SMART LEARNING line of development aims to promote the training of Master’s and Doctoral students in the issues of the SEI (Smart Engineering Infrastructures) sector, through initiatives of comparison with national and international realities of excellence and the intensification of educational visits.

For the year 2024, the following four educational visit initiatives will be funded, in which students of the Master’s Degree belonging to the Department will participate:

2-day visit to the Cargo City Milan Malpensa Airport:

The Cargo City of Milan Malpensa is a reality of excellence at national and European level, in first place in Italy for transported goods and permanently among the top ten positions in Europe. The Cargo City covers an area of 500,000 square meters and is constantly expanding; It is able to assist any type of goods, offering handling services with high standards of quality, safety and reliability. The reference is to the following themes of the SEI ICEA project:

• Smart City: The services available in the Cargo City make it possible to optimize the time of acceptance and unloading of goods, to make the processes and methods of managing shipments more efficient and to know the stages of the cargo handling process, making the airport’s cargo yard a “Smart City” aligned with the information and communication standards of the most advanced and important European Cargo airports.

• Smart Data: the Cargo city has a digital information management system that allows the exchange of information between the various players in the logistics chain.

• Smart Infrastructures: the Cargo city includes a series of innovative and specialized infrastructures that allow you to manage any type of goods, from shipments of machinery of great weight and size, to small shipments.

• Smart Mobility: the Cargo city currently adopts a digital system to optimize the management of traffic inside and outside the air cargo.

2-day visit to the Gleno Dam and the Montebello Detention Basin construction site:

The numerous catastrophic events, recent and not, caused by intense meteoric events have brought attention to the issue of the fragility of the national territory with regard to hydraulic safety. Moreover, the expected effects, and in many cases already present, of climate change will certainly not be able to improve the current criticality. In the context of the actions and strategies to be adopted for the mitigation of hydraulic hazard, a crucial role is played by monitoring with innovative and intelligent systems (Smart Monitoring) applied to the management of river systems and hydraulic works intended for regulation. During the educational visit, the students of the master’s degree course in Civil-Hydraulic Engineering and in Environmental Engineering will have the opportunity to view the complex of engineering works and the structural and hydraulic control systems of the Gleno dam, as well as the characteristics of the Montebello detention basin construction site.

2-day visit to Near Zero Energy Building (NZEB) in Austria:

The didactic visit will focus on the realities of excellence operating in the field of NZEB (Near Zero Energy Building) wooden buildings. Students will be able to deepen the construction issues of high-efficiency wooden buildings, through a visit to some Austrian centers specialized in these technologies. In order to provide a general overview of the topic as exhaustive and multidisciplinary as possible, the didactic activity will also include a preliminary visit to a real NZEB building, thermo-hygrometrically and fully instrumented, in whose design the aforementioned realities of excellence have been involved. In this way, the didactic action in the classroom can be effectively integrated and complete, involving students in both the theoretical and practical aspects of the professional reality.

5-day visit to Moena for participation in the 4th SIIV International Winter School on topics related to “Smart Infrastructures and Sustainable Mobility”:

The SIIV International Winter School, which will reach its fourth edition in 2024, is organized by the Italian Road Infrastructure Society and is aimed at young researchers in the field of transport infrastructure. The participation of Master’s degree students in Civil Engineering will allow them to have access to advanced knowledge, normally not available in traditional curricula. The innovative topics addressed by eminent Italian and foreign experts, teachers of the Winter School, are fully in line with the development lines of the SEI ICEA project. For example, during the previous edition, entitled “Pavement Assessment and management towards Smart and Safer Mobility – PASS”, a virtuous transition towards more sustainable and smart road infrastructures that adequately interface with the new cooperative, connected and autonomous mobility (Smart Mobility) systems and whose quality is controlled and guaranteed over time also thanks to the support of advanced asset monitoring and management systems was discussed (Smart Monitoring & Data).
